Healing After Bone Grafting - What You Should Know

Posted on 5/15/2026 by Surprise Oral & Implant Surgery
X-ray of bone grafting. Bone grafting might sound a little scary, but it's actually a pretty common procedure. Think of it like this: sometimes your jawbone needs a little extra help to be strong and healthy, especially if you're considering implants or other types of restoration dentistry. Bone grafting helps rebuild or strengthen the bone in your jaw. Understanding what to expect after the procedure can make the healing process smoother and less stressful. Let's dive into what you should know.

The First Few Days: What to Expect

The first few days after your bone grafting procedure are the most crucial for healing. You'll likely experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. This is completely normal and a sign that your body is starting the healing process. Your surgeon will likely prescribe pain medication to help manage any discomfort. It's important to take the medication as directed.

You'll also notice some bleeding. Applying gentle pressure to the area with gauze pads, as instructed by your surgeon, can help control it. Avoid strenuous activity during this time. Rest is your best friend! Propping your head up with extra pillows while you sleep can also help reduce swelling.

Eating and Drinking

What you eat and drink plays a big role in how quickly you heal. Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days. Think things like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, soup, and applesauce. Avoid anything that requires a lot of chewing or could irritate the surgical site.

It's also crucial to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, but avoid using straws. The sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot that's forming and delay healing. Avoid alcohol and smoking, as these can significantly impair your body's ability to heal.

Oral Care After Bone Grafting

Maintaining good oral care is absolutely essential after bone grafting. However, you'll need to be extra gentle with the surgical area. Your surgeon will likely provide you with a special mouthwash to use. This helps keep the area clean and prevent infection.

Avoid brushing directly on the surgical site for the first few days. You can gently brush the rest of your teeth, being careful not to disturb the graft. After a few days, your surgeon may instruct you to start gently cleaning the area with a soft toothbrush. Follow their instructions carefully. Remember, proper oral care is key to successful integration of the bone graft and future restoration dentistry.

What's Normal, and When to Call

It's normal to experience some minor discomfort and swelling after bone grafting. However, there are some signs that warrant a call to your surgeon. These include:
•  Uncontrolled bleeding
•  Severe pain that isn't relieved by medication
•  Signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or pus
•  Numbness that lasts longer than expected

Don't hesitate to contact your surgeon if you have any concerns. They are there to help you through the healing process.

Long-Term Healing

While the initial healing period lasts a few weeks, complete integration of the bone graft can take several months. During this time, the new bone will fuse with your existing jawbone, creating a strong and stable foundation for future restoration dentistry. Attend all follow-up appointments with your surgeon so they can monitor your progress and ensure everything is healing as expected. With proper care and attention, you'll be well on your way to a healthy and functional smile!
